I predict a riot, a SOPA riot

The Stop Online Privacy Act or SOPA is a dirty word around the internet right now, but what actually is SOPA all about?

Well it’s all about websites like Piratebay, termed by the MPAA as “Rogue websites” According to Mark Elliot, Executive vice president at the U.S. chambers of commerce in a letter to the New York times

“Rogue Web sites that steal America’s innovative and creative products attract more than 53 billion visits a year and threaten more than 19 million American jobs. Congress is considering legislation that could help cut these criminals off from the American market.

Rogue sites are often located outside the United States, beyond the reach of our enforcement agencies. Proposed legislation authorizes a federal court to direct the suspension of services (payment processing, advertisements and linking) to rogue sites.

Protecting American innovation, jobs and consumers from foreign criminals is critical to a secure Internet and a prosperous future.”

Support worldwide for the SOPA anti-piracy bill is rapidly dwindling, even the U.S. administration was forced on Saturday to issue a statement from an online petition:

“While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.” Read the rest of this entry »

An Anonymous Christmas present

Anonymous seem to be starting the New Year with a bang with the compromise of California Statewide Law Enforcement Association’s (CSLEA) website,  and New York Police Chief’s email.

This follows on from the Stratfor hack on Christmas Eve, in which user names, password hashes and credit card details were leaked. As well as allowing Anonymous to use these credit card details to make donations to Charities as part of OpRobinHood

Initially Anonymous were targeting financial institutes “to rob from the rich”, looks like they came up against a brick wall with their SQL injection attacks against banks, and switched to easier targets, in this case Stratfor.

Sabu the de-facto leader of Lulzsec tweeted that they had compromised Stratfor months ago, and had possibly been issuing false intelligence reports that there media and intelligence customer rely on.

Attack of the drones…

There has been much speculation over the last few days on the US unmanned drone an RQ-170 sentinel, and how it fell into Iranian hands.

The Iranian government stated that it was a cyber-attack (or an act of cyber warfare) carried out by personnel in the Revolutionary guards that caused the drone to land in Iranian territory.  We usually associate a cyber-attack as something that is carried out by either a nation state or an adversary against a web site or system that has connectivity over the internet.

Earlier this year for example there was an attack against the networks of Lockheed Martin, the US’s largest defense contractor, and also the makers of the RQ-170 drone.

In theory anything that has an operating system, be it a printer, computer workstation or even an unmanned drone can be attacked, controlled and compromised, after all if hackers can interfere with US satellites, as they did with the Terra AM-1 earth observation satellites then it could be possible to do the same with unmanned drones.
